Why Loki is a Villain, Not a Puppet

E-mail Print PDF

So, I recently signed up on Tumblr and have been flooded with reblogs and posts and pictures and fanart of Avengers, mostly centered on Loki. What can I say? I love the bad boys.

Yes, yes I do.

I was fully aware beforehand that Loki had a massive fangirl following (and I mean that sincerely, not judgmentally) due to Tom Hiddleston’s excellent portrayal of the god of mischief and lies in Thor last year. Well, since he went completely batshit in Avengers, he’s gained quite a few more fans, like when Heath Ledger’s Joker got more fangirls than Batman (wtf?). I was unaware, however, that a certain portion of these fans are under the impression that Loki’s actions in Avengers were not his own and that he was in fact being controlled by some outside force. Since I’ve been fascinated with Loki as a character for years in mythology and now with his onscreen interpretation (and I have the kind of time to do something like this), I wanted to address the hypothesis that he's little more than a plaything for a character we only see for literally two seconds after all is said and done, as well as the thought that all he needs is a cuddle session to be a better person.

MASSIVE SPOILERS FOR THOR AND AVENGERS AFTER THE JUMP!

Cosplayers with Boobs: I Hear They're Human, Too

A fellow cosplayer recently linked this article on Nerd Caliber regarding the treatment of female cosplayers by the mainstream media. It segue ways into a discussion about women in the public eye in general and actually made me sit down and think for a bit about this topic. There are many things about this hobby I wish would change, but none so emphatically as this.

Emotional Investment: Torchwood vs. Doctor Who

E-mail Print PDF

I'm going to admit something I don't think many people know: I don't cry a lot. It takes a lot for me to get all watery-eyed and even more for me to cry in front of someone. So when BBC America recently ran an all-day marathon of the five-episode arc Torchwood: Children of Earth I knew I was in trouble. My blubbering during those five hours formed an idea in my tiny little brain and next thing I know I'm here typing out what could be the basis for a dissertation on psychology regarding popular culture. There will be major spoilers herein, especially for Children of Earth and Miracle Day!

Stormy Won a Prize! Stormy Wants to Brag!

E-mail Print PDF

Last month, I entered a contest on Facebook through Comikaze's and Stan Lee's profiles. It was a trivia contest focused on Mr. Lee himself and random nuggets of info about the documentary Superheroes, which was released on DVD November 15. I didn't expect to win a single thing (the prizes were free admission to Comikaze Expo [but I couldn't make it out there] and copies of the DVD signed by Stan Lee himself), but it was something fun to do and certainly put my Googling skills to the test. Lo and behold, I got an email shortly after the contest ended saying I was one of the winners! Hooray! I just received my copy of the DVD and not only did Mr. Lee sign it, he signed it to me PERSONALLY! I know, it's probably not much and I'm still just one more fan amongst millions, but you have no idea how happy it made me to see my name in his handwriting! I even scared my poor cat with my insanely girlish fansquee of glee ^_^

And just to prove I'm not making this all up, here's the pic:

Yes, that's my ugly mug outside of cosplay. I look like such a spaz, BUT I DON'T CARE!!! I have a DVD signed TO ME by STAN FREAKIN' LEE!!! I OUTRANK YOU!

I haven't watched the documentary yet, but I'll be sure to write up a full review when I do. I'm holding off until the weekend so I can immerse myself in it without distractions (i.e. work and such). Keep an eye out for it, and go buy your copy right this minute!

Oh, and POW! Entertainment is holding another Superheroes trivia contest for the chance to win a signed poster of the movie. Check it out here and enter now! The contest ends December 7, so hurry it up! EXCELSIOR!!!

How to Be a Good Customer - Because Holiday Shopping doesn't stop with Black Friday!

I would like to preface this how-to guide with the information that I do indeed work in retail as my day job. It sucks overall, but it pays for my little obsessions and hobbies. The worst day of the year for anyone in retail is, of course, Black Friday. Having to suffer through the hellish nature of the day myself twice in the year I've been in the business, I realized that I've been mentally compiling a list of what I've seen or heard of customers doing or saying that piss me off to no end. So, I thought what better way to try to take some of the stress of the work off by making a guide like this? Here goes!
