Although originally filmed in 2010, Trek Nation will be premiering on the Science Channel on November 30, 2011 at 8PM. The documentary follows Rod Roddenberry as he explores the impact the Star Trek franchise has left on many fans, directors, actors, and other influential folks. More than that, it follows Rod's journey to discover more about his father Gene, the man who created what is arguably the best-known sci-fi series on the planet. It is often true that we learn more about the people we know through the work they do and create rather than we could in a lifetime of conversations; seeing their work lets us see into their heads and observe how their minds operate with all the subtleties and flaws we may never have seen otherwise. I think that's what makes this documentary so fascinating: on one level it follows a son who is simply trying to learn more about his father, but on another it presents a view of a franchise that has inspired millions around the world to do incredible things with their lives.
Direct from the press release: “Gene Roddenberry is the original thought-provocateur; the rebel-genius who was not afraid to push the boundaries of what science can accomplish,” said Debbie Myers, general manager and executive vice president of SCIENCE. “Star Trek used science fiction to hold a mirror to society, leveraging its storylines as a platform for social commentary touching on topics such as racism, sexism, the economy, war, peace and religion. Working with Rod, and showing footage never shared on television is what makes TREK NATION truly inspiring.”
Again, Trek Nation will debut in a two-hour event on the Science Channel on November 30 at 8PM. Set your DVRs, folks!
