Sci-Fi Film Reviews

Random Movie Session / Mini Review -- Chronicle

Sometimes when Hollywood pops up with a new movie based on a beloved fandom using instead Americanized concepts and interpretation. The general concensus is nerdrage...

Sometimes, we (also) get films that we immediately connect with or relagate toward one of those beloved fandoms, even when the interest was not as such. Recently I talked about Drive that did exactly that.  It's hard, quite hard, to look at this film and not say that it could have easily been an episode right out of Grand Theft Auto. From the music, the visuals, the concept of the main, all action no talk, character.

GPX's Top Sci-Fi Series you have to watch for 2012

E-mail Print PDF

When it comes to Science Fiction, many of us will feverishly battle using the greatest of our nerd wits to argue which of our beloved shows is truly the best.  But I propose a slightly different approach.  I won't make the grandiose assumption of stating what we at GPX believe to be the number one greatest show of all time.  We can offer our own opinion, but for each of us its very different sure (For me, it's a cross between Star Wars, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, and Stargate SG-1. For Stormraven, it's undoubtedly Doctor Who while Spark3r loves Star Wars and any Sci-Fi with big boobs, derp).  So instead I'll state what we believe to be the top 25 without issuing an order and mention them from their time periods instead, starting with 1950-1960.

Why did I decide to write this article? That's simple; someone told me to watch a series from 2006 and asked me if I liked it. The series was Hyperdrive which I thought had some funny moments but mostly was pretty bad.  I asked my friend what he liked in Science Fiction and he told me cool special effects. So I asked which series had he seen. He only mentioned some movies, and I realized he hadn't really seen much. He had seen Voyager and some Farscape but for the most part no other series, simply Sci-Fi movies.

Because of this, I pointed him to a myriad of awesome. Because we here at GPX think it's important you watch amazing series and learn from the old school to appreciate the new school.

Trek Nation to Premiere on Science Channel

Although originally filmed in 2010, Trek Nation will be premiering on the Science Channel on November 30, 2011 at 8PM. The documentary follows Rod Roddenberry as he explores the impact the Star Trek franchise has left on many fans, directors, actors, and other influential folks. More than that, it follows Rod's journey to discover more about his father Gene, the man who created what is arguably the best-known sci-fi series on the planet. It is often true that we learn more about the people we know through the work they do and create rather than we could in a lifetime of conversations; seeing their work lets us see into their heads and observe how their minds operate with all the subtleties and flaws we may never have seen otherwise. I think that's what makes this documentary so fascinating: on one level it follows a son who is simply trying to learn more about his father, but on another it presents a view of a franchise that has inspired millions around the world to do incredible things with their lives.

Direct from the press release: “Gene Roddenberry is the original thought-provocateur; the rebel-genius who was not afraid to push the boundaries of what science can accomplish,” said Debbie Myers, general manager and executive vice president of SCIENCE.  “Star Trek used science fiction to hold a mirror to society, leveraging its storylines as a platform for social commentary touching on topics such as racism, sexism, the economy, war, peace and religion.  Working with Rod, and showing footage never shared on television is what makes TREK NATION truly inspiring.”

Again, Trek Nation will debut in a two-hour event on the Science Channel on November 30 at 8PM. Set your DVRs, folks!

Random Tuesday Night Sci-Fi - "Evolution"

E-mail Print PDF

I laughed my ass off in the theater when I saw this film, not necessarily for all of it, but for some very particular scenes that allowed me to be a total kid.  I loved it then, and I still laugh watching it now.  You can rent it or buy it at Blockbuster for roughly $6...

Hackers

I like going back to older flicks when Angelina Jolie didn't try to use awkward accents or play weird characters that she strangely portrays.  This movie isn't the greatest thing out there, but I find it quite entertaining.
