For many people, when anime is mentioned things like Dragon Ball Z, Yu Gi Oh!, and Naruto are the first things they think of. Though these are legitimate anime series, they can some times lead people to believe that anime is for children (though that can also be because they watch it on American TV where scripts are rewritten and watered down for the younger audience while the language in the original is a bit more coarse). For this reason I can appreciate darker and more serious anime series, and Elfen Lied fits the bill perfectly with its heavy blood, gore, and dark story.
The story starts with Lucy, a Diclonius (a young girl with pink hair and powerful invisible arms...yes, I know. It's pretty badass), escaping from a science facility, but in the process of her escape she is injured and develops a second personality. She is found by a young man named Kohta and his cousin when she washes up on the beach the next day.
One key to this series is its dramatic irony: the knowledge of her being a Diclonius is hidden from Kohta and while further events transpire he continues to be none the wiser. Another interesting part is that although this anime is very violent, one of the key points is its ability to discuss issues such as oppression and genocide. The series also dives into issues such as DID (dissociative identity disorder): while one of Lucy's personalities is a cute girl that can only say "nyu", the other is a completely homicidal maniac. But the most important (read: enjoyable) part of this series is seeing people be killed by invisible hands of death ^_^
Elfen Lied is phenomenal and worth a watch for anyone, but keep the youngins away. The series is available on DVD and Netflix.
